Excerpt from :
Treasure Diving with Captain Dom
by Yvonne Addario
. . . then one day, his life changed forever. Two surfers had
told a local lifeguard about a cannon and an anchor that stuck out
of the sand in only ten feet of water. The lifeguard asked Captain
Dom for his help and advice.
This could be an ancient shipwreck! the captain thought.
His journey had begun.
Captain Dom was appointed the first federal substitute custodian of
the abandoned shipwreck site. Later, the court substituted Jupiter
Wreck Inc. (JWI), a newly formed Florida corporation, for Captain
Dom’s name.
At that time, neither the lifeguard nor Captain Dom knew that the
discovery laws would undergo a major change and play a large part in
the rules affecting the future rights of others who researched and
recovered historic shipwrecks. With the change in laws, the captain
became the last person who could “stake his claim” on a shipwreck in
the state of Florida.
